Censorship and the History of Banned Books
Censorship is a highly debated and controversial topic in today's society. Censorship can best be defined by yourdictionary.com, which says, "the practice of limiting access to information, ideas or books in order to prevent knowledge or freedom of thought." The definition has long carried a negative connotation that some say is a violation of their rights and is not in line with the 1st amendment, which grants the freedom of speech.
vbThe history of banned books begins with a book published in 1440, The Holy Bible, the Bible was banned during the years 1926-1956 in Soviet Russia and also in Ethiopia in 1986. Throughout time books have been banned for reasons such as imposing communist beliefs, seemed "too radical", strong sexual themes, offensive to religious groups, and even for obscene language.
